2008

In 2008 (Heisei 20), in my mid-forties, I created my first-ever N-scale railway layout (1:150 scale), “Railway Diorama.“ Fifteen years later, in 2023 (Reiwa 5), I renovated the work. It was inspired by a rustic post town in a mountainous area. During the renovation, I tried to preserve the atmosphere of the original work as much as possible, mainly making improvements such as installing LED lighting and renovating the base.

Even before creating the 2008 work, I had become fascinated with the “machiya”—traditional wooden townhouses combining shops and residences, generally built up until around the early Showa period—and their streetscapes that still remained in various parts of the Kanto region. I had a strong desire to express their appeal in some form of my own. Around that time, I happened to see an example of N-scale diorama construction on a program on NHK television, which further inspired me, and I created this work on impulse.

Because I created it simply out of a desire to express the appeal of streets lined with “machiya” in the form of a model, I did not pay particular attention to the historical period at the time. However, this work subsequently became the starting point for my later artistic concept of depicting Japanese streetscapes and landscapes around the beginning of the 20th century.

All of the buildings (structures) were designed and built by me from scratch. The station building, however, was also scratch-built with reference to a commercially available kit (I believe it was made by Green Max).

(The Japanese roof tiles, fences, vehicles, figures, and other details were made using commercially available plastic modeling materials.)

In fact, before constructing this layout, I had already made several experimental 1:150-scale machiya structures. I remember selecting the buildings used in this layout from among those prototypes. The buildings that were not selected were subsequently incorporated into some of my later works.
