This is a Virtual Architecture object—an imaginary structure that could not exist in reality. It was created as an artwork using techniques commonly employed in the construction of dioramas (approximately 1:150 scale). The work is an homage to the dawn of modernist architecture approximately one century ago.

The structure is an imaginary architectural form incorporating a spiral corridor, with the corridor rising at an approximate gradient of 1:8. It was created according to the same concept as “Sazaerou”, an object completed in 2016, “Sazaerou 2”, an object completed in 2019, and represents Version 3 of that work.

As with my previous object works, the structure is surrounded by water. At a time when rising sea levels caused by global warming are becoming an increasingly tangible reality, the work expresses the danger faced by major coastal cities and islands around the world as they confront the threat of submersion.

As with the first structure, the title was inspired by Sazaedō—Buddhist halls containing internal spiral corridors that were built in large numbers in the Kantō and Tōhoku regions during the late Edo period. Several examples of these remarkable structures are said to survive to the present day.

  • 1:AC Power Jack (Detachable Power Cord)
  • 2:AC Power Splitter (1-to-3)
  • 3:Individual Switches (Alternate Type, 3 Circuits)
  • 4:AC Adapter (AC 100–240 V → DC 12 V, 2.0 A, Compatible with 100–240 V AC Input, for LED Tape Around the Perimeter of the Base Frame) — Designation A
  • 5:Dimmer (for LED Tape Around the Perimeter of the Base Frame, Designation A)
  • 6:AC Adapter (AC 100–240 V →DC 5.0 V, 2.0 A, for Interior Building LEDs) — Designation B
  • 7:AC Adapter (AC 100–240 V →DC 5.0 V, 2.0 A, for Exterior Building LEDs) — Designation C
  • An AC adapter was used as the power supply. One circuit was provided for the warm-white LEDs inside the building (5 V adapter, 2.0 A, designation B), and another for the external illumination, including white LEDs (5 V adapter, 2.0 A, designation C). In addition, LED tape was installed around the perimeter of the base frame. High-color-rendering 2835 LED tape, known for its durability, was used (12 V, 2.0 A AC adapter with a dimmer, designation A).

The capacities of the three AC adapters listed above were selected to provide approximately 1.4 times the amperage required by calculation.

The 12 V LED tape was wired and installed in accordance with the retailer’s manual. For the LEDs used in and around the building itself, a CRD (E-153) and a 560 Ω resistor were soldered to each individual LED in consideration of LED longevity. All LEDs used inside and outside the building are connected in parallel.

In the near future, rising sea levels have dramatically reduced the amount of land available on Earth. In order to make the most efficient use of limited resources, humanity has begun constructing towering structures on the sea and in shallow coastal waters, building cities vertically rather than horizontally.

Among these structures, one in particular immediately captures the eye: Sazaerou Building No. 3.

With its organic form, the building appears almost alive. Countless additions, structural extensions, pipes, and passageways intertwine in complex ways. The architecture itself seems to possess an inherent capacity for continual expansion and adaptation.

Sazaerou Building No. 3 is far more than a residential structure. Its interior integrates factories, farms, and communal spaces, allowing its inhabitants to sustain themselves independently. At the top of the building is an observation deck offering a panoramic view of the vast ocean.

The structure also serves as a landmark, much like a lighthouse guiding vessels across the sea. The cloud-like formation at its summit is said to possess the ability to purify the surrounding atmosphere.

However, Sazaerou Building No. 3 has a secret known to everyone.

It is not merely a building.

It is a device—constructed for a purpose that remains unknown.

Investigations are currently underway, and unfortunately, it is not yet possible to reveal any further details.

Structures resembling Sazaerou Building No. 3 have been discovered at various locations across the world’s oceans. They are numbered according to the order in which they are discovered.

Several structures with distinctly different forms have also been found and given the name Dairyōunkaku. These, too, are numbered in the order of their discovery.

It appears that the groups of structures known as Sazaerou and Dairyōunkaku each possess specialized functions.

They seem to exchange information with one another, almost like cells in a brain, forming a vast network.

Together, they appear to serve a larger purpose:

maintaining the balance of Earth’s environment.
